“The JTFA has successfully increased coordination and collaboration between the Department of Justice, DHS and foreign law enforcement partners,” Garland said.

Prosecutors from several U.S. Attorney’s Offices, including the Southern and Western Districts of Texas, the District of New Mexico, the District of Arizona, and the Southern District of California, have been seconded to JTFA. The task force is supported by various components of the Department of Justice, including the Criminal Division’s Human Rights and Special Prosecutions Section and the Office of International Affairs.

In December 2023, the Drug and Organized Crime Task Forces (OCDETF) announced a new strategic initiative to further strengthen the targeting of transnational criminal organizations and human smuggling networks.

Key cases include United States v. Felipe Diego Alonzo, et al., where U.S. and Guatemalan law enforcement coordinated the arrest of 19 members of a human trafficking ring.
