14-year-old boy charged with armed carjacking of rideshare driver

CHICAGO — A 14-year-old boy accused of stealing a rideshare driver’s car at gunpoint on the city’s West Side now faces criminal charges.

Chicago police said the teen, who was not identified because of his age, was charged with one count of aggravated vehicular hijacking with a firearm and one count of armed robbery charge.

The charges stem from the teen’s role in an armed carjacking that allegedly occurred Sunday, March 31, in the 1300 block of South Independence Boulevard in North Lawndale.

Authorities say the teen allegedly held a 25-year-old rideshare driver at gunpoint before stealing his vehicle.

Police and members of the U.S. Marshals Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force eventually caught up with the teen in the 3100 block of West Harrison Street, where he was taken into custody Monday.

It is not yet known when the teenager will next appear in court.
