Manchester United youngster completes quick transfer after rejecting contract

Omari Forson has joined Monza after rejecting a new deal with Manchester United.

The 19-year-old, who made his first-team debut as a substitute in the 2-0 FA Cup win over Wigan in January, has made seven senior appearances during the 2023/24 season. He made his first Premier League start against Fulham and was a regular in the team throughout the second half of the campaign.

With his contract set to expire at the end of June, Forson was named on United’s shortlist for next season and offered a new deal. The Manchester Evening News reported on Tuesday morning that the teenager had refused these new terms with Serie A side Monza, now announcing the signing of Forson, who has a contract until 2028.

Although he is set to join the club on a free transfer, United will receive compensation from Monza. His choice of destination was a surprise, but Forson should get regular playing time next season. Monza finished 12th in Serie A, although that might have been the case had they not finished the season without a win in nine matches.

Forson left Tottenham for United in 2019 and progressed through the youth system before being integrated into the first team. He took part in the club’s pre-season tour of the United States last summer but had to wait six months before making his first senior appearance.

His appearance against Arsenal last month proved to be his last in a United shirt. Forson is not the only player to leave United this summer, with Raphael Varane, Brandon Williams and Anthony Martial confirmed to leave at the end of the month. Others could follow during the summer transfer window.
