Man, teen arrested in connection with deadly north Phoenix robbery

PHOENIX (AZFamille) — A man and a teenager are in custody after police say they are connected to a deadly robbery in north Phoenix last month.

Police said Derrick Teague, 19, was arrested for his involvement in Friday’s homicide and a juvenile was taken into custody Saturday.

Police say the two suspects planned to rob Carlos Mercado Chavez, 22, near 28th Street and Greenway Road. During the robbery, Chávez was shot and died from his injuries.

He was found the morning of May 28, when his girlfriend reportedly called 911 to say she found her boyfriend, Chavez, dead in his car.

Police say no other suspects appear to be involved in Chavez’s death.

Teague and the teen were taken into custody and face multiple criminal charges, including murder and armed robbery.

An investigation is underway.
