General insurance companies cannot reject claims for lack of documents (Irdai)

“No claim will be rejected for lack of documents. The required documents must be requested at the time of subscribing to the proposal. Additionally, retail customers can cancel the policy at any time by notifying the insurer. The insurer can only terminate the contract due to proven fraud.

The insurer must refund a proportionate premium for the unexpired insurance period in case of cancellation, the circular said.

Irdai has also set strict deadlines for settlement of claims, including appointment of surveyors and submission of their reports.

It will be the duty of the insurer to obtain timely investigation reports, Irdai said.
