Attempted theft of Tesco goods worth £1,700 stopped by police

The incident happened last week while officers were patrolling around Abingdon, including retail parks and shopping centres.

Officers arrested a man who allegedly attempted to steal items from Tesco Extra on Marcham Road.

The goods were worth more than £1,700 and the incident was later followed by an attempted shoplift in Abingdon’s Poundland.

Thames Valley Police took to social media to share the news as well as other incidents which have been dealt with, including damage to play equipment at Marcham Park.

A spokesperson for TVP South Oxfordshire and Vale said: “PCSOs Wright, Islam, & Crowther and PCs Musat & Roberts from the Abingdon Neighborhood Team had a series of busy shifts last week.

“Patrols completed in the city centre, Fairacres & Seacourt retail parks and Westway Shopping Centre, Botley.

“Stopped a man from stealing more than £1,700 worth of goods from Tesco and later that day dissuaded a man from shoplifting in Poundland.

“We responded to a report of additional damage to play equipment in Marcham Park.

“Regular patrols continue to reassure residents and investigations are ongoing.”

The same officers also seized a gang-owned golf club and baseball bat and arrested a man after he allegedly punched an off-duty police officer.
