A SHOP THIEF who pushed and punched a shop worker and head-butted the windows of a business in Poulner has been jailed.

He attacked a member of staff who challenged him as he tried to steal two bottles of wine from Tesco, pushing and punching him.

Burnell then headbutted and damaged a window at Belinda’s Bakery, before headbutting and damaging another at Wine Box, while attempting to resist arrest.

In addition to the five-week prison sentence, the court ordered the defendant to pay £50 in compensation.

Sharing news of the conviction, police urged store owners or staff to continue to report any incidents of assault, shoplifting or vandalism.

“As this highlights again, we can take action, but only if incidents are reported to us,” a spokesperson for the Hampshire force said.

“With your information we can take action, including arresting and charging suspects and sentencing offenders to court, as the above once again demonstrates. »
