Touch A Truck event launches library reading program | News

To kick off the Yuba County Library’s summer reading program, the library held a Touch A Truck event in its parking lot on Monday where community members could explore different types of vehicles.

It was an opportunity to see a fire truck, a bus, a Yuba Water Agency vehicle, a tractor, a police car and a police boat. Where else could you get all these sitting opportunities at once?

Lindsay Jordan, senior library technician for Yuba County, said this event brings together many different local agencies to support the community, and the community can also show their support in return.

“It’s just a good way to attract people so they can learn about our summer reading program and other local agencies that they might not be able to talk to directly,” said Jordan said. “I love all of them (the vehicles), especially our first responders. I am so grateful that they are willing to come, especially since they are so busy all the time. So I love that they take the time to come out and spend time with the kids and come here – to support us in that way.

The library’s summer reading program, which runs through July 23, is aimed at children and teens. Not all children want to read during the summer.

“But they only have to read 20 minutes a day during (the covered weeks), and they will get a prize if they do that,” Jordan said.

“You need reading in everything you do, whether it’s driving (or cooking),” Jordan said. “(It’s) not only to help you develop your own imagination, but it is also one.”

Another program the library is offering this month is called Food for Fines. With Food for Fines, you can pay overdue library fines with unopened, unexpired, non-perishable food. These donations will be given to the Yuba County Department of Health and Human Services, according to officials.

“(Once,) a parent came in, she forgot that she had fines on her account. Her kids really wanted to read books, but she didn’t have any cash on her,” Jordan said. “She had a few cans that she was willing to part with, and so she was able to donate a few and clear her account. Her children were so happy to be able to view articles, they received a calendar and have been coming to our programs ever since.

Jordan said it’s one of her favorite memories from working at the library so far, and as far as favorites go, she loves the book “Never Let Me Go.”

“It makes me cry,” she said. “That might sound a little morbid, I don’t know. We’re going to go anyway. Basically, diseases and things like that don’t exist anymore, but the reason it’s not a thing is because we’ve gotten really good at cloning people.
