Justice Clarence Thomas Could Actually Face Consequences for Traveling on Luxury Yachts and Private Jets Without Disclosure

It would seem that Supreme Court corruption is untouchable, but last week, Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) and Sen. Ron Wyden (D-OR) submitted a formal request to United States Attorney General Merrick Garland for Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas to be investigated. Separately, this week, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York has filed articles of impeachment not only against Thomas, but also against his fellow Justice Samuel Alito. Thanks to crack report of ProPublicaThe world became aware last year that Supreme Court Justice has been accept millions of dollars in lavish vacations, yacht trips and international jet travel at the expense of Republican billionaire and megadonor Harlan Crowin violation of civil servant laws and disclosure standards.

For more than 20 years, Thomas and his wife have travelled at Crow’s request, despite the lifetime official’s requirement to adhere to a strict code of ethics. That includes disclosing gifts and any non-government income worth more than $415, which he has repeatedly failed to do. ProPublica The report details Crow’s contributions to Thomas and his family, including a yacht trip to Russia with a private helicopter ride to St. Petersburg, allowing Thomas’ mother to live rent-free in a Crow-owned home and paying Thomas’ great-nephew’s $6,000-a-month private boarding school tuition.

“Justice Thomas and Alito’s repeated failure over decades to disclose that they received millions of dollars in gifts from individuals with cases before the court is explicitly contrary to the law,” Ocasio-Cortez’s statement read.

The Whitehouse/Wyden letter, dated July 3, made public that Senate investigations found evidence of “repeated and deliberate” omissions, including gifts and income, from Justice Thomas’s required annual financial reports.

“The appointment of a special prosecutor would serve the public interest,” Whitehouse and Wyden wrote. “The public must have confidence that the judiciary and the Department of Justice will carry out their responsibilities fairly, impartially, and without regard to political expediency or partisan interests.”

Thomas said he did not think it was necessary to report these trips because he had been informed early in his tenure that they were “personal hospitality.” He repeatedly stated that these trips were not arranged or requested by him, that he was simply accompanying Crow on his annual trips out of kindness.

In addition to the Russia trip, Clarence and Ginni Thomas reportedly traveled aboard Crow’s 165-foot superyacht, the Michaela Rose, to Indonesia, Savannah, Georgia, New Zealand, and Greece. It appears that the majority of these trips also included flights aboard Crow’s private Bombardier Global 5000 jet. The non-yacht trips also include annual stays at Crow’s private Adirondack compound and his Texas ranch. I wonder why a right-wing billionaire real estate developer would want to curry favor with a sitting judge on the highest court in the land. Probably just a coincidence. This whole investigation is more than likely a witch hunt. No witches here!

Justice Thomas, 76, is the court’s longest-serving justice, having been appointed in 1991 by President George H.W. Bush.
