LPF Webinar on Combating Retail Theft Today

Shoplifting is now considered the number one property crime in the United States. It also has far-reaching consequences: higher retail prices for commodities to offset losses, significant loss of state and local tax revenue and legal fees, reduced work hours and loss of community jobs if stores close, and, with more brazen shoplifters, possible loss of life among security guards and loss prevention professionals.

CIS Security Solutions is pleased to introduce one of the sponsors of the new Florida House of Representatives Bill HB-0549, Florida House Representative John Snyder (R) in this webinar today, July 11th at 1:00 PM ET. He will enlighten us on the details of HB-0549 and how it will impact shoplifting and our communities in the future. This bill mentions the word “theft” 22 times. It was signed into law by Governor DeSantis on April 9, 2024 in Stuart FL at our local Walgreens, 1.5 miles down the road from CIS Security Solutions’ offices.

HB-0549: Reduces the minimum threshold amount for third-degree robbery; creates a new offense for robberies; provides enhanced criminal penalties for first-degree petty thefts and those with certain prior convictions; revises the number of thefts required in the specified aggregation period required to commit a specified offense for retail theft; revises the specified time periods in which individual acts of retail theft may be aggregated; prohibits retail theft with a specified number of other persons for a specified purpose; prohibits retail theft when the social media platform is used to solicit participation; requires that a person convicted of retail theft pay specified restitution.
