According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, the number of opioid-related overdose deaths increased from 21,089 in 2010 to 47,600 in 2017 and remained stable through 2019. The number of deaths increased significantly in 2020, with 68,630 deaths reported, and again in 2021 with 80,411 overdose deaths reported, NIDA reports.
