Mother of victim killed in possible drive-by shooting seeks justice for her son

Mother of victim killed in possible drive-by shooting seeks justice for her son

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) – As the Richland County Sheriff’s Department (RCSD) continues to investigate a fatal shooting, the mother of one of the victims is demanding justice for her son.

Tiffany Barber is the mother of 22-year-old Dominic Goodwin.

“I’m not supposed to bury my son, my son is supposed to bury me,” Barber said.

Goodwin and Xavier J. Hopkins, 22, of Columbia, were identified by Richland County Coroner Naida Rutherford as two of three victims of a possible drive-by shooting in the 300 block of Hickory Ridge Drive.

According to the RCSD, when officers responded to the shooting, they found a car in the front yard with Goodwin and Hopkins inside. A third person, who has not been identified, was found inside the home with non-life-threatening injuries.

Barber told WIS News 10 that her son and Hopkins were best friends growing up. She said she received a phone call from her sister-in-law about her son’s death.

“It’s like they’re ripping my heart out of my body, it’s like I lost my whole soul last night, I shouldn’t have to go through this,” Barber said.

Goodwin’s aunt, Brittany Barber, said he will be remembered for his smile and love for his family.

“He was the sweetest, sweetest boy you could ever meet. Like his mother said, he always showed love and a big heart,” Brittany said. “He could tell his family he loved them as much as he could, every day, every chance he got.”

The shooting scene is less than five minutes from Hopkin’s home. WIS News 10 went to the scene and spoke with several people who live in the area.

Residents said they heard loud gunfire and saw a group of law enforcement officers late Tuesday night, but did not see the shooting. Some said they were surprised that a shooting had occurred in the neighborhood.

Christal Lamb, who has lived in her home for more than 30 years, said she never imagined a shooting would happen near her home.

The RCSD said this is an active investigation and no arrests have been made.

WIS News 10 reached out to phone numbers associated with Xavier J. Hopkins’ family, but no one answered.
