SPD FIU detectives seize firearm, drugs after investigation at Fernwold and Baldwin streets

Springfield, Massachusetts — On Tuesday, July 9, members of the Springfield Police Firearms Investigation Unit (FIU), the Springfield Police K-9 Unit and the Hampden County Sheriff’s Department arrested three suspects and seized a loaded firearm, heroin, cocaine and Xanax.

FIU detectives received information about an open-air drug deal in the area of ​​Fernwold and Baldwin Streets and have been investigating for the past two months. On Tuesday, detectives observed a suspected drug transaction around 12:15 p.m. and again around 3:15 p.m.

Around 4:50 p.m., the three suspects were all in an SUV and detectives responded. They arrested Douglass Moss, 21, who was in the front passenger seat. Detectives recovered 33 bags of heroin, crack cocaine and $1,906 from Moss.

Detectives arrested Khalil Laboy, 20, who was in the back seat. Detectives found a loaded firearm strapped to his waistband and recovered two bags of cocaine and 15 bags of heroin from the area where he was sitting, along with $108. Springfield Police K9 Flexx conducted a preliminary search of the vehicle and alerted detectives to the presence of narcotics.

Investigators also arrested Luis Alicea-Rivera, 30, who was behind the wheel. They found heroin and Xanax pills in the corner where he was sitting, along with more than $2,300 in cash.

Douglass Moss, 21, of Springfield, is charged with:

  • Possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony (three counts)
  • Possession of a firearm without an identification card
  • Conspiracy to Violate Drug Laws
  • Possession with intent to distribute a class A drug (heroin)
  • Possession with intent to distribute a class B drug (cocaine)
  • Possession with intent to distribute a class B drug (crack cocaine)
  • Possession with intent to distribute a class E drug (Xanax)

Khalil Laboy, 20, of Springfield, is charged with:

  • Possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony (three counts)
  • Possession of a firearm without an identification card
  • Conspiracy to Violate Drug Laws
  • Possession with intent to distribute a class A drug (heroin)
  • Possession with intent to distribute a class B drug (cocaine)
  • Possession with intent to distribute a class B drug (crack cocaine)
  • Possession with intent to distribute a class E drug (Xanax)

Luis Alicea-Rivera, 30, of Springfield, is charged with:

  • Possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony (three counts)
  • Possession of a firearm without an identification card
  • Conspiracy to Violate Drug Laws
  • Possession with intent to distribute a class A drug (heroin)
  • Possession with intent to distribute a class B drug (cocaine)
  • Possession with intent to distribute a class B drug (crack cocaine)
  • Possession with intent to distribute a class E drug (Xanax)
