Alec Baldwin’s trial begins for Rust murder

Alec BaldwinThe trial for his role in the affair accidental gunshot death from the director of photography Halyna Hutchins on the set of the western film Rust began Wednesday in a Santa Fe, New Mexico, courtroom. RadarOnline.com has learned.

In October 2021, a replica gun owned by Baldwin fired, discharging a live round that killed Hutchins and injured the director. Joel SouzaBaldwin has repeatedly claimed that he did not pull the trigger and that the gun went off accidentally.

The actor, who also served as a producer on the film, is charged with involuntary manslaughter, a felony. If convicted, he faces up to 18 months in prison. He has pleaded not guilty.

Judge Mary Marlow Sommer The judge opened the trial by instructing the jury, reminding the 16 jurors of their “special responsibility” in the case and reading a copy of the grand jury indictment against Baldwin. The judge told jurors the trial is expected to last eight days, not including jury deliberations.

“When someone is playing pretend with a real gun in a real workplace, and playing pretend with that gun violates the cardinal rules of firearm safety, people’s lives are in danger and someone could be killed,” the special prosecutor said. “The evidence will demonstrate that someone who played pretend with a real gun and violated the cardinal rules of firearm safety is the defendant, Alexander Baldwin,” she continued, claiming that Baldwin asked for “the largest gun available,” repeatedly exhibited reckless behavior and violated safety protocol, and actually pulled the trigger.

“This is an unspeakable tragedy, but Alec Baldwin committed no crime. He was an actor, he was acting,” the defense said in its opening statements. “Those cardinal rules? They don’t apply on a movie set … live ammunition is never supposed to be used on a movie set.”

Baldwin’s Wife Hilaria attended the trial to show her support. The couple entered together before Baldwin took his place in the dock and Hilaria sat in the front row of the public gallery. Baldwin’s sister Beth and brother Etienne were also present.

Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, RustThe chief armorer of , was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter earlier this year after two weeks of testimonies and less than three hours of deliberation. She received the maximum sentence of 18 months in prison.
