Democratic senators call for criminal investigation into Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas

Two leading Democratic senators have called on the Justice Department to open a criminal investigation into Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas for potential ethics violations, false statements and tax laws. Sens. Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island and Ron Wyden of Oregon are urging Attorney General Merrick Garland to appoint a special prosecutor to investigate Thomas’ failure to disclose lavish gifts, luxury trips and other perks provided to Thomas by wealthy friends, including billionaire conservative megadonor Harlan Crow. “No government official should be above the law,” the senators said in a statement.
