Italian police operations target terrorist financing network

Italian anti-terrorism police have launched operations across the country in search of 14 suspects linked to a network supporting militants in Syria.

Prosecutors said Thursday that police had issued arrest warrants for four suspected militants, a Syrian and three Moroccans, in Sardinia; and elsewhere in the country for 10 Syrians suspected of money laundering and other financial crimes linked to terrorist financing.

Police searched 20 homes in three regions of northern Italy and in Sardinia.

Italian anti-terrorism prosecutor Federico Cafiero de Raho told Sky TG24 that the suspects belonged to a single cell that “collected and distributed considerable funds to Syria to support the war”.

He said all were legal residents of Italy.

Police videos showed officers executing arrest warrants before dawn. It was not immediately clear how many people were taken into custody.
