Submarine cable damage lawsuit revived by Court of Appeal

Baltimore Gas & Electric Co. can sue a contractor for allegedly hitting a 13,000-volt underwater power cable after an appeals court said federal admiralty jurisdiction exists in the case.

A Pasadena, Maryland, homeowner couple wanted to expand their pier at Eli Cove, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit Judge J. Harvie Wilkinson III said. They hired Coastline Commercial Contracting, whose barge allegedly struck the cable that had “stood still for more than 30 years,” causing $1.3 million in damage and knocking out power to the area, the Fourth Circuit said Tuesday.
