ELGIN, Ill. — Authorities are investigating a fatal shooting in Elgin after an off-duty Kane County sheriff’s deputy discovered an armed robbery in progress Monday afternoon.

Elgin police were called to the scene near the intersection of Walnut Avenue and National Street shortly after 4:30 p.m. Monday following a report of a shooting in the area, according to the Kane County District Attorney’s Office.

WGN-TV obtained video from viewers after the shooting. For more, see the attached video.

According to Kane County Sheriff Ron Hain, an armed robbery was in progress when an off-duty police officer driving through the area saw one individual attack another. After the suspect displayed a gun, Hain said, the officer shot and killed him.

The suspect has not yet been identified. The other individual involved in the attack was not injured, nor was the off-duty police officer.

“Our deputy acted with great courage outside of his duties and saved many lives,” Hain said in a statement Monday night. “Actions by police officers like these should be commended for their work, whether they are on-duty or off-duty.”

Hain also confirmed that the Kane County Major Crimes Task Force is handling the administrative side of the investigation, while the Elgin Police Department is investigating the criminal incident that led to the shooting.

In a Zoom interview Tuesday morning, Hain reiterated how proud he was that the off-duty deputy took immediate action Monday when he was notified of the incident.

“I have to emphasize how heroic the work of police officers, even outside of their working hours, is when they see something like this happening, and they intervene and take immediate action,” Hain said.

“I couldn’t be more proud of him.”

Several residents in the neighborhood told WGN-TV they heard three or four gunshots. Another resident in the neighborhood said she saw a man lying on the ground after the incident.

The intersection of Walnut Ave. and National St., which was closed in all directions Monday night while authorities investigated, was reopened Tuesday morning.
