ECOWAS parliamentarians call for legislation on cannabis use

Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives and Member of the ECOWAS Parliament, Benjamin Kalu, calls for a clear protocol and position on the use of cannabis across the world and particularly in the ECOWAS region on how to operate and legislate appropriately as he reacts to a presentation on drug abuse in the region by UNODC to the ECOWAS Parliament.

The increase in crime and criminality, particularly in the West African region, is a major concern that affects the stability and economic development of the region.

At the ECOWAS Parliament, a representative of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime made a presentation on the impact of drug abuse in the region and the contribution of the UN agency to combating this menace.

Some members of parliament want their countries to redouble their efforts and for the region to collaborate more.

UNODC believes that education and awareness-raising play an important role in combating drug use and abuse.
