‘Indian 2’ stars create awareness video supporting Telangana govt’s anti-drug initiative

Hyderabad (Telangana) (India), July 9: After actor Siddharth’s controversial remarks on Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy and his subsequent clarification, the team of the film ‘Indian 2’, comprising stars Kamal Haasan, Siddharth, Samuthirakani and director S Shankar, has come up with an awareness video promoting the government’s initiative for a drug-free society.

Telangana CM Revanth Reddy shared the video on Tuesday and thanked the ‘Indian 2’ team for their contribution. “My special congratulations to the team of Bharateeyudu-2. For a drug-free society… In support of the efforts of the state government… Shri Kamal Haasan… Shri Shankar… Shri Siddhartha… This awareness video with Shri Samudrakhani… It’s a joy to create it. #DrugFreeTelangana #SayNoToDrugs,” he wrote on X.

In the video, Kamal Haasan can be heard saying, “Please say no to drugs. I applaud the Telangana government for making it mandatory to spread this message at such media events. Say no to drugs.”

Actor Siddharth added, “Please say no to drugs. I appreciate and support this initiative of the Telangana government. Good luck.”

Samuthirakani and director S Shankar also supported the initiative.

Actor Siddharth has released a video clarifying his position and extending his full support to Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy’s initiative to curb drug addiction in the state. The clarification comes after the controversy sparked by Siddharth’s remarks at a press conference related to the film ‘Indian 2’.

Speaking to the media, Siddharth’s response to a question regarding the social responsibility of actors led to a misunderstanding.

He said, “My name is Siddharth. I have been in front of the Telugu public for the last 20 years. I worked with the united Andhra Pradesh government from 2005 to 2011 to promote safe sex. My picture with a condom was used on hoardings for this purpose. It was my responsibility, not because a CM told me to do so.”

“If I am asked whether an actor already has a responsibility, I will say ‘No comment’ because I do not understand this. Every actor is socially responsible. We act according to our conscience. If a CM asks us to do something, we will do it. No CM has told us, only if you do this, we will do something else,” he added.

However, later in the day, Siddharth took to Instagram to clear the air. He posted a video reaffirming his support for CM Revanth Reddy’s efforts against drug addiction.

In the video, Siddharth said, “We talk about zero tolerance in the film ‘Indian 2’. Zero tolerance against corruption and zero tolerance against drugs. During a press conference related to the film, while I was answering a question, some people misunderstood it. I must immediately clear this misunderstanding. I fully support Chief Minister Revanth Reddy and the Telangana government in the fight against drugs.”

“The future of our children is not only in their hands but also in ours. Safeguarding their future is our responsibility. I 100% support Chief Minister Revanth Reddy and his government in their initiative and directives to involve the film industry to create a better society with the government. I have always supported social initiatives and will continue to do so. I just wanted to say that no one forced us to leave the government and we did it of our own free will. I would like to congratulate the Chief Minister and his government for their persistent fight against drugs. We are with you, sir,” he added.

On July 2, Chief Minister Revanth Reddy had urged the film industry to create awareness videos on drug abuse during a speech at the Telangana Police Command and Control Centre in Hyderabad.

He stressed, “My suggestion to the important people in the film industry is that you approach the government to increase the ticket prices when a film is released, but you are not fulfilling your social responsibility to combat cybercrime and drug use. I am instructing the officials that in the coming days, if anyone approaches the government to increase the ticket prices, they should make a video with the stars on how to combat cybercrime and drug use, and this is a prerequisite.”

“Indian 2”, which also stars superstar Kamal Haasan, is the sequel to the 1996 film “Indian”. “Indian” starred Kamal as Veerasekaran Senapathy.

The franchise brings back Kamal and director S Shankar for the sequel.

The poster shows vigilante Senapathy (Kamal Haasan) standing with his trademark crooked finger in handcuffed hands.

Rakul Preet Singh and Kajal Aggarwal are also part of the film.

“Indian 2” has music by Anirudh Ravichander and stars Jayamohan, Kabilan Vairamuthu and Lakshmi Saravanakumar as writers.

The first poster of ‘Indian 2’ was unveiled on the occasion of Pongal festival in 2020.
