Action against PWD engineer, contractor wanted

Leaders of political parties and organisations on Tuesday demanded the setting up of a high-level committee to inspect the quality of construction of a new block on the premises of the government hospital in Cumbum, where a part of the building collapsed, claiming the life of a worker.

Leading the protest outside the GH in Cumbum, former CPI(M) MLA K. Balabharathi demanded the dismissal of the engineer of the public works department for failing to ensure quality work and safety measures for the workers. The contractor should be arrested for doing substandard work.

The Madurai worker was crushed to death after a part of the structure on which the building was resting collapsed. Two other workers were injured in the incident.

Leaders of the Communist Party of India, All India Forward Bloc, Adhi Tamilar Peravai, Indian Union Muslim League, Manithaneya Makkal KAtchi, Vivasaya Viduthalai Munnani and Makkal Athigaram were among those who participated.
