The management of the University of Nigeria Nsukka has confirmed the tragic death of a first year student whose lifeless body was discovered in a drainage on Friday, July 5.

The deceased, identified as Favour Okenyi of the Department of Medical Laboratory Sciences, was found near Akanu Ibiam Stadium within the university premises.

In a statement issued on Sunday in Nsukka, the acting Public Relations Officer of the university, Okwun Omeaku, confirmed the incident.

He said the university community is deeply shocked and saddened by the unfortunate death of the young student.

“The circumstances surrounding the death are currently the subject of an investigation which will assist the investigations and make it possible to find the perpetrator(s) of this malicious act,” he said.

The statement extended condolences to the family of the deceased and said the university authority was collaborating with security agencies and the family of the deceased to uncover the circumstances surrounding his death to prevent any recurrence.

“The university community was shocked on Friday, July 5, by the shocking discovery of a lifeless body found in a drainage near Akanu Ibiam Stadium, UNN.

“The University administration is deeply saddened by the loss of our student and extends its sincere condolences to the deceased’s family for the tragic passing of such a promising young student.

“The management is working with security agencies and the family of the deceased to uncover the circumstances surrounding her death and to prevent any potential recurrence of such incidents in the future,” the statement added.
