828 HIV cases reported in state, 47 deaths; drug use likely to cause outbreak

An HIV outbreak in Tripura has claimed the lives of 47 students and infected 828 others. Officials of the Tripura AIDS Control Society (TSACS) said the spike in HIV cases could be due to injecting drug abuse among students.

TSACS has identified students from approximately 220 schools and 24 colleges and universities who use injection drugs.

“So far, 220 schools and 24 colleges and universities have been identified where students were found addicted to intravenous drug use. We have collected data from a total of 164 health institutions across the state. Reports are being collected from almost all blocks and subdivisions before making this presentation,” said the TSACS deputy director ANI.

“In most cases, the children belong to wealthy families who are diagnosed with HIV. There are families where both parents are civil servants and do not hesitate to respond to the children’s requests. When they realize that their children are victims of drugs, it is already too late,” he added.

According to TSACS, 828 students have tested positive for HIV in Tripura, of which 572 are still alive while 47 others have lost their lives.

TSACS officials noted that the rise in HIV cases could be attributed to injection drug abuse among students, many of whom come from wealthy families.

“In most cases, the children belong to families where both parents work in public services and are able to meet their demands,” TSACS officials stressed. “Unfortunately, by the time they realize that their children are victims of drugs, it is often too late.”
