CITY OF LEGAZPI – Two members of the New People’s Army (NPA) were killed in a clash with government troops on Monday in Barangay San Roque, Esperanza town, Masbate province, the Philippine Army (PA) reported.

Maj. Frank Roldan, head of the 9th Infantry Division (9ID) public affairs unit, said troops encountered at least eight rebels belonging to Komiteng Larangang Guerilla-South, Sub-Regional Committee-4, operating in Masbate.

“After 15 minutes of fighting, the NPA members fled to other areas, abandoning their dead comrades. We are still waiting for the identity of the two NPA members who were killed during the clash,” he said.

Roldan said among the items recovered from the encounter site were an M653 rifle, a .38 caliber revolver and some personal effects of the rebels.

Troops in the area are still conducting pursuit operations.

He also said 9ID is encouraging residents to continue to provide information about rebels who may be hiding.

The military also ensured public safety, citing intensified operations against gunmen aimed at stamping out the insurgency in the Bicol region. (PNA)
