Three people remanded in custody for kidnapping and cutting off victim’s finger

A group of three people were arrested and remanded in custody in a case of kidnapping and amputation of the victim’s finger.

In connection with this case, a 23-year-old, a 21-year-old and an 18-year-old were arrested.

The three suspects are Maldivians.

The three youths are accused of stabbing, assault and battery on a person and holding a hostage in the capital, Male.

The criminal court remanded the three suspects in custody until the end of their trial.

The court order revealed that sufficient evidence had been produced to prove the charges against them.

In this regard, investigative statements, snapshots of CCTV footage, photographs of the victim’s injuries, intelligence reports and other evidence were submitted.

Stressing that based on the photographs of the victims, it appears that the victim was subjected to prolonged torture, the court order revealed that sufficient evidence has been filed to prove that the “organized” crime was committed over a long period of time, by a group of individuals.

However, one of the defendants in the case denied the allegations, saying he did not cut off the victim’s finger and that the injury was caused while using a power tool.

The court ordered the authorities to conclude the investigation into the case as soon as possible and forward it to the Attorney General’s Office (PG Office) for prosecution.

Judge Mohamed Misbah issued the criminal court order.
