Father of inmate claims prison authorities’ involvement in son’s death, files murder complaint in Rawalpindi

RAWALPINDI:

The father of an inmate who died under mysterious circumstances in Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail has filed a murder complaint against the jail authorities, police said on Monday.

Shahid Bhatti, the father of 22-year-old Shahwaiz Bhatti, who is remanded in custody for murder, has filed a complaint at Saddar Beroni police station. He claimed that his son was killed by prison staff in collusion with opponents.

“My son, who was shifted to Adiala jail on June 10 on judicial remand, had an argument with another inmate named Saim a few days ago,” Bhatti said.

On July 8, Bhatti received a call informing him of his son’s deteriorating health. He rushed to the Rawalpindi district hospital, where he discovered his son’s lifeless body.

“I am convinced that the prison administration, in cahoots with its rivals, murdered my son. When I visited him on July 4, the prison staff initially denied entry. After my insistence, they allowed a brief meeting during which my son revealed that he had been placed in solitary confinement and that he feared for his life,” Bhatti added.

The police have registered a case of murder and launched an investigation. In the meantime, a judicial inquiry and an autopsy of the deceased have been ordered to ascertain the cause of death.
