Former Rowan County Teacher Sentenced for Producing Child Pornography

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) — A Morehead, Kentucky man, Andrew Zaheri, 40, was sentenced Monday by U.S. District Judge David Bunning to 22 years in prison for producing child pornography.

According to his plea agreement, Zaheri entered into a sexual relationship with a minor female student at the high school where he was employed as a teacher in the summer of 2022. The relationship continued throughout the school year, and Zaheri notably participated in sexual acts with the victim during school hours. Zaheri admitted that during the relationship, he produced sexually explicit images and videos of the minor victim using his cellphone.

Under federal law, Zaheri will have to serve 85 percent of his prison sentence. Upon his release, he will be under the supervision of the U.S. Probation Office for 22 years.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office prosecuted this case as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in 2006 by the Department of Justice to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse. Led by the U.S. Attorney’s Offices and the Criminal Division’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section (CEOS), Project Safe Childhood mobilizes federal, state, and local resources to better locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who exploit children over the Internet, as well as identify and rescue victims.
