Gold smuggling: Gold smuggling ring busted, four arrested in Surat | Surat News

Surat: The Special Operations Group (SOG) has busted a gold smuggling ring and arrested four persons, including a couple who had illegally brought 927 grams of gold worth Rs 65 lakhs from Dubai to Surat airport. In a night operation, SOG sleuths arrested the couple, Naeem Saleh (29) and his wife Umaima (25) from outside a hotel in Jahangirpura area and arrested two persons who had come to collect the gold. The couple landed at Dubai International Airport in the early hours of Sunday. The police had a tough time finding the gold from the four bags as the yellow metal was concealed in the rubber sheet which was sprayed with a chemical that cannot be detected by the airport scanners. This is the first time that the police have stumbled upon such a modus operandi of gold smuggling. The Saleh couple are residents of Mosali village in Mangrol taluka of Surat district. “The two men were sent to Dubai by Mosali resident Maulana Abdul Bemat (33), who was handling smuggling operations from Surat and coordinated with a gang from Dubai. Bemat had come with Firoz Nur (48), a resident of Vasaravi village in Mangrol, to collect the gold. They had smuggled gold by mixing it with chemicals and spraying it on the rexine and rubber sheets of four trolley bags. SOG police inspector A P Chaudhary received a tip-off that a couple carrying gold would land in Surat on July 7 on a flight from Dubai. After landing at Surat airport and successfully clearing customs and immigration, the couple headed to a hotel at 2.45 am on July 7. Outside the hotel, they handed over the four bags to Bemat and Nur. The SOG police stopped them and booked all four for further investigation. They have been charged under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) for fraud, forgery and criminal conspiracy.
