UNN investigates death of freshman found in campus sewer

The University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Enugu State, has said it is collaborating with security agents in the state to unravel the circumstances surrounding the death of a 100 level student, Favour Okenyi, whose body was found in a drain on the university campus.

The university’s acting Public Relations Officer, Okwun Omeaku, disclosed this in a statement obtained by Metro PUNCH Monday.

Our correspondent learnt that the Level 100 student of the Department of Medical Laboratory Science allegedly went missing after attending a practical chemistry class.

His body was however found near Eni Njoku Men’s Hostel near the University Stadium junction on Friday evening.

Several videos and photos circulating on social media showed the body in what appeared to be a drainage system.

Reacting further, Omeaku, while describing the incident as shocking, condoled with the family of the deceased and added that the university authority was working with agents to prevent such incidents from happening again.

He said: “The university community was shocked on Friday, July 5, by the shocking discovery of a lifeless body found in a drainage near Akanu Ibiam Stadium, UNN.

“The university administration is deeply saddened by the loss of our student and extends its sincere condolences to the deceased’s family for the tragic passing of such a promising young student.

“The management is working with security agencies and the family of the deceased to uncover the circumstances surrounding her death and to prevent any potential recurrence of such incidents in the future.”

He concluded that an investigation that would lead to the arrest of the perpetrators was underway.

“The circumstances surrounding the death are currently under investigation which will assist the investigations and help find the perpetrator(s) of this malicious act,” Omeaku concluded.

Contacted for a reaction on Sunday, the State Police Public Relations Officer, Daniel Ndukwe, asked our correspondent to send an SMS which was sent to his line.

However, he did not respond to repeated calls and messages sent to him on Sunday and Monday.
