Manchester United’s new offer for Jarrad Branthwaite could be rejected by Everton

Manchester United have submitted a fresh bid worth £50million for Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite, talkSPORT understands.

But the Toffees are expected to reject the £45million offer for the attacker plus £5million in add-ons for their young centre-back.

Everton are understood to want £70million for the 22-year-old England defender.

Everton rejected the Red Devils’ initial £35million offer last month.

talkSPORT reported last month that personal terms had been agreed between the centre-back and Man United.

Red Devils boss Erik ten Hag is looking for defensive reinforcements after seeing Raphael Varane leave the club when his contract expires.

Minority Manchester United owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe is determined not to overpay players as the club has done in the past.

The player had a good season with Everton and was called up to Gareth Southgate’s provisional 33-man England squad but narrowly missed out on a place at Euro 2024.

Real Madrid have also been linked with Branthwaite, but Manchester United appear to be the only serious suitors for him.

“He’s literally playing above his age,” Everton team-mate Ashley Young told talkSPORT of Branthwaite.

“He takes no prisoners, he wants to play football.

“He can tackle, he can head and he can also score. He has all the qualities to be a great central defender for many years.”

Branthwaite began his career at his hometown club Carlisle United but joined Everton in January 2020 at the age of 17.

He had initially signed a two-and-a-half-year contract at Goodison Park, but this was extended by a further year until June 2023 shortly afterwards.

Branthwaite was loaned to Blackburn and also enjoyed a productive spell with PSV Eindhoven during the 2022/23 season, winning the KNVB Cup with them, before signing another new contract with Everton in October 2023.

As well as winning the Young Player of the Year and Players’ Player of the Year awards with Everton last season, Branthwaite was part of the England squad that won the European Under-21 Championship last season.
